One of the projects I tackled was coloring most of the flannel board stories that have been published in The Friend magazine over the years. I've decided to start sharing them online so whoever wants to use them can benefit from them as well. All of the stories both texts and pictures are property of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They are free online for use in your home or at church. They are however in only black and white drawings. So I used my paint program to color them on the computer. I will post three stories a week until they are all posted. Each one will be in a different post and will be linked here creating a master link list to all of them.
If you prefer to color your own I will also provide the link to the original flannel board story in each post. Or you can visit The Activity Closet for a master link list to all the original stories. Saves time trying to do a search on the church website.
I have upload these flannel board stories as zip files. Click on each link to be taken to the 4shared download site. If you want all of the stories instead of just a few these zip files are the way to go!

Usually I print the stories out on cardstock, laminate them, then stick the hook part of sticky backed velcro on the back of each piece. Sarah at a little of this, a little of that has written a wonderful tutorial on how to make your flannel board story pieces out of fabric. You can read it here, Felt Figure Fun. (thanks, Sarah!)

ReplyDeleteI love this! I printed mine off on printable iron on transfer paper, and then ironed them right onto felt. Now I have fabulous looking felt figures for FHE. Thanks for all the work you put into this!
ReplyDeleteThere is a really simple way to get around the file size limitation on Blogger. Google also has a free website program called Google Pages. You can set a page for free, post files of any size, and then make a link on your blogger site. Hope that helps.

Cocoa, these are wonderful. I love that you've also given the link to the originals. I'm trading piano lessons for finished flannel board pieces right now, and I would really struggle with where to get the blank pictures from without your hard work. The young man who's taking the lessons loves it, and it's just working so beautifully!

ReplyDeleteI use Photoshop Elements to do all the coloring. My sister-in-law just uses the basic paint program that comes with all computers to do coloring for her file folder games.

ReplyDeleteI love your site! I especially love the flannel board stories that you have colored! They are wonderful! I am struggling trying to print off the creation story in color. It cuts off part of the earth image and it also cuts off the legs of adam and eve. I've adjusted the margins and it hasn't helped. I've had great success printing out all of the other stories. Any suggestions on how to get them printed out fully? Thanks.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad the flannel board stories are of use to you! As for the Creation figures Adam and Eve's feet are not all there in the Friend Magazine either. They are cut off about half way. The earth also has a bit cut off in the image I got from the Friend Magazine. The only solution I can think of is to draw in what's cut off before laminating them. Sorry, that's not much help!

ReplyDeleteI have a question for you about printing these pictures out. I am unable to click on each individual picture; I can only click on the whole sheet of pictures, and then when I try to print out that sheet it is slightly fuzzy. Any ideas for troubleshooting?

The pictures don't print individually - just on the whole sheet as that's how they were in The Friend. The fuzziness is a result of the darn internet and my not knowing exactly the best way to upload them without losing quality.

ReplyDeleteI use the sticky back velcro (the hook part). They stick much better. I have heard, but haven't tried it, that one can print them out on some thinner pellon (a type of crafting interfacing) and they'll stick right to a flannel board.

ReplyDeleteI don't know of any printable flannel board backgrounds. These are used without backgrounds. They aren't specifically to be used with any books either but that is a good idea.

ReplyDeleteShare away! When I was in charge of our FHE Enrichment group I burned all the flannel board stories to a CD so everyone could have access to them.
For a flannel board we used the top of a banker box that we glued felt to. We keep all of our FHE lessons in file folders in the banker's box. The outside of the box is decorated with family pictures and one side has our FHE chart. Hmm.. I thought I made a post about it but I can't find it so looks like I might just publish a post tomorrow about it!
Another easy thing to do is just lay a piece of felt across the back of the couch and use that as an easy flannel board.

ReplyDeleteFor my flannel board, I bought an art canvas at the craft store and covered it with black flannel. Super fast and easy!

I hadn't. These are great. Thanks. I am sure they'll be seeing some use in primary, FHE and homeschool. She said she made first vision flannel kits for all of her Cub Scouts (they need to teach the First Vision in FHE for their religious square knot).

My hubby and my resolution for this year is to have FHE every week, as we have a 10 month old, and want to develop good habits, etc, etc...So I'm putting this all on felt with the iron ons. Its turning out to be quite the investment money wise, (Those Iron-on Printable Transfer sheets are pricey!) But that's just what Im hoping it'll be. An investment. Thank you again!

ReplyDeleteI just wanted to share a quick tip. You can buy 15 inch non gauze milk filters, cut them down to 8 1/2 x 11 size, and then print right on them! Then you just have to cut out your pieces and you have a perfect flannel board set.

After printing the figures out, did you cut them out, then laminate, then cut them again, or did you just laminate the whole sheet and then cut them out once? If you did laminate then cut once, do they hold up okay?
Also, since the figures are laminated, do they need to be printed out on cardstock, or do you think plain paper would be stiff enough after being laminated?

So the other day, I came up with this ingenius idea.... how about color all the church flannel board stories in photo shop, print them on transfer paper, and transfer them to felt so I have a whole bunch of flannel board stories for cheap?! Hahahaha!!! I should have known someone else already had the same great idea. ;-) I'm just glad I was only a few stories into my project when I stumbled across your website. I was wondering the same thing as someone above. Did you cut out, then laminate or did you laminate and then cut? How does the lamination hold up if you did it and then cut the figures out? And can you use normal printer paper or do you have to use cardstock? These are awesome. Thank you!

ReplyDeleteNo. When these were created over eight years ago they were made from what the church made available online - before they realized how important dpi {pixels} were to good quality printing. They will print a little fuzzy unless you try to reduce them in size a bit.
