For the next several days I will be posting about the World Congress of Families. This year it is being held in Sydney, Australia.  Remember how we helped to raise funds for Angela to attend? She is sending daily reports of the presentations, interviews she is able to have, and more. I am excited to share with you what she is experiencing. There are so many around the world - politicians, religious leaders, community organizers, trained professionals, and others - who are dedicated to defending the family. I will try to post each day's events in order so you are not reading them backwards as you scroll down. I have broken up Angela's summaries into several posts so it isn't overwhelming to see a HUGE post. Remember, if you have any questions you would like her to ask when she gives her interviews, leave them in the comments and I will pass them along to her.

Independence Day 2008

Happy Fourth of July to all my fellow Americans! May your day be filled as John Adams envisioned in this letter to his wife, Abigail:

"The *second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epocha in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of the continent to the other, from this time forward, forevermore." (italics and bold added by me)

* July 2, 1776, Congress voted that the American Colonies become independent from Great Britain. July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress.

  1. I love the words of John Adams and those of his wife, Abigail!! We just watched the HBO movie about him, and I'm not recommending it. I'm sure that the real John Adams is sick over this portrayal!

  2. We had a water fight with our entire street followed by a potluck BBQ and amateur fireworks...so maybe we got a couple of these things in. And the guys were talking about rabbit hunting, so that sort of ties the guns in there, lol.

Hope you had a lovely 4th with your family!

  3. In my post last year about FoJ, I included this quote too. It helps to remember that what we do today is tied to the actual events that occured and people that lived so long ago. Thanks for spreading the patriotism!

  7. What a fabulous quote. I think our American traditions live up to that pretty well. We got the parade, games, sports, guns, and illuminations into our day so I guess we did pretty well.

Put "eat chocolate" at the top of your list of things to do today. That way, at least you'll get one thing done. ☺ There, don't you feel better?

Please leave a comment! I enjoy hearing your thoughts, whether you agree with me or not. If we all agreed on everything how boring would that be? Worse than eating white chocolate, because it's fake. So be real, be yourself.
