For the next several days I will be posting about the World Congress of Families. This year it is being held in Sydney, Australia.  Remember how we helped to raise funds for Angela to attend? She is sending daily reports of the presentations, interviews she is able to have, and more. I am excited to share with you what she is experiencing. There are so many around the world - politicians, religious leaders, community organizers, trained professionals, and others - who are dedicated to defending the family. I will try to post each day's events in order so you are not reading them backwards as you scroll down. I have broken up Angela's summaries into several posts so it isn't overwhelming to see a HUGE post. Remember, if you have any questions you would like her to ask when she gives her interviews, leave them in the comments and I will pass them along to her.

As Sisters In Zion {Giveaway}

As sisters in Zion we'll all work together....so begins the hymn that has become the anthem for the women of Relief Society.

*You know the words but do you know the story behind them? Did you know they were written to describe Emily Hill's experience traveling with the now famed Willie Handcart Company? I didn't either!

Emily and her older sister, Julia, had joined the Church as teenagers in England and been disowned by their family. After four years they had finally earned passage for their way to America. They were crossing the American plains with the Willie handcart company when they and many others were stranded on the trail by an early October storm. Emily and Julia joined forces with a young widow and her five children to help one another survive the bitter cold and starvation they now faced. In later years Emily would write a poem about that time. "We'll comfort the weary and strengthen the weak" takes on new meaning when you imagine her experience traversing the snow-packed Rocky Ridge in Wyoming, pulling a handcart, herself being weak and weary.

This book, As Sisters in Zion, by Debbie J. Christensen tells Emily's and Julia's story in more detail. It is personal as the author is a great-great-granddaughter of Julia! I read it one afternoon when our power was out for several hours {so pioneerish of me, don't you think?}. It is a beautiful testament to the strength of women. I enjoyed reading their experiences, connecting to them as a fellow sister in Zion, trying to traverse my own set of "Rocky Ridges." It is a reminder that I cannot do it alone. It takes all of us helping each other, encouraging one another onward and upward.

*Here are the words to refresh your memory.

As sisters in Zion, we’ll all work together;
The blessings of God on our labors we’ll seek.
We’ll build up his kingdom with earnest endeavor;
We’ll comfort the weary and strengthen the weak.

The errand of angels is given to women;
And this is a gift that, as sisters, we claim:
To do whatsoever is gentle and human,
To cheer and to bless in humanity’s name.

How vast is our purpose, how broad is our mission,
If we but fulfill it in spirit and deed.
Oh, naught but the Spirit’s divinest tuition
Can give us the wisdom to truly succeed.
(Hymns, no. 309)

  18. I had great great great grandparents in the Martin Company, Sarah and Charles Wilkinson. They drove President Richard's books across the plains. They aren't well known to many, but I love their stories. I like to think back to them when something in my life is difficult. Anyway, thank you for sharing this book!

Put "eat chocolate" at the top of your list of things to do today. That way, at least you'll get one thing done. ☺ There, don't you feel better?

Please leave a comment! I enjoy hearing your thoughts, whether you agree with me or not. If we all agreed on everything how boring would that be? Worse than eating white chocolate, because it's fake. So be real, be yourself.
