For the next several days I will be posting about the World Congress of Families. This year it is being held in Sydney, Australia.  Remember how we helped to raise funds for Angela to attend? She is sending daily reports of the presentations, interviews she is able to have, and more. I am excited to share with you what she is experiencing. There are so many around the world - politicians, religious leaders, community organizers, trained professionals, and others - who are dedicated to defending the family. I will try to post each day's events in order so you are not reading them backwards as you scroll down. I have broken up Angela's summaries into several posts so it isn't overwhelming to see a HUGE post. Remember, if you have any questions you would like her to ask when she gives her interviews, leave them in the comments and I will pass them along to her.

Good Ol' Family Movies

Our family loves to watch old movies, the older the better! I thought I'd share a new to us movie we've watched lately as well as our absolute favorites.

The Mating of Millie is a romantic comedy starring Glenn Ford and Evelyn Keys. Millie is a single woman who tries to find a husband in order to adopt an orphan boy. {New to Us}

Friendly Persuasion - The Birdwell family are Quakers living in Indiana during the Civil War. The family struggles on how true they will stand to their Quaker convictions about music, the war, and even other forms of violence. :-D You'll see what I mean when you watch! Starring Gary Cooper and Dorothy McGuire.

Follow Me, Boys! - based on the book God and My Country by Mackinley Kantor, it tells the story of  Lemuel "Lem" Siddons who serves as Scoutmaster for 40 years in a small town impacting the lives of all the boys under his care. Starring Fred MacMurray and Kurt Russell

Sergeant York - another Gary Cooper film, it's a biographical movie about the life of Alvin York, the most decorated American soldier of WWI.

Cheaper By the Dozen and Belles on Their Toes - the story of Frank and Lillian Gilbreth and their twelve children. It seems no matter what era a large family lives there are many things that are still the same!

What old movies do you enjoy watching with your family?

  1. We also love "Follow Me Boys". Another one the kids like is "The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band." All we watch is old movies...too much junk in most of the new movies.

  2. We always enjoyed watching Yours, Mine, and Ours- such a funny movie (we were a large military family too, though not that large). We also enjoy the old musicals- Oklahoma, Singing in the Rain, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, etc.

  3. My all time favorite is To Kill a Mockingbird, Robert Duvall doesn't speak one word in that film, but he communicates volumns with his expression, but, pretty much anything with Gregory Peck or Gary Cooper. Another favorite is Spencer's Mountain, and a more recent fav is Second Hand Lions. Old Movies are the BEST!!!

  4. My dad got me hooked on old movies and I got my husband hooked on them. :) I absolutely LOVE Friendly Persuasion. I also love The Bachelor and the Bobbysoxer with Cary Grant and Shirley Temple (when she's a teenager!). If your family likes musicals at all, I also love The Court Jester with Danny Kaye. Oh! And I love Roman Holiday! I'll stop there. :)

I had a wonderful bishop recommend Follow Me, Boys when I was first married and seeing it on your list of favorites reminded me that I haven't seen it yet! So thank you for the reminder! :)

  9. I especially love old musicals. I really LOL at Annie Get Your Gun. I especially love that my boys are watching right along with me and loving them too. I have to train them for their wives. :)

I see a couple on your list I haven't watched, so thank you for the new movies to watch. :)

  10. Court Jester is a favorite. Our Bishop gave Follow Me, Boys to my husband when he was called as YM President. Musicals mentioned above are fun. I also like Calamity Jane, Holiday Inn, Swiss Family Robinson, Hello Dolly. We have more movies made before I was born than we have recent movies.

  11. Swiss Family Robinson is one I grew up watching. And The Sound of Music. My sisters and I would each pick a Von Trapp sister and recite the movie while we were doing our Saturday chores.

  16. I really like musicals, so those are always fun. I'm guessing the Princess Bride doesn't count as an old movie, but it's a family favorite....we quote it all the time. It's lines are fabulous!

  19. I can't believe no one has mentioned "Pollyanna"! It is a seriously life-changing movie. I also love all the old Hayley Mills classics, like the original "Parent Trap." For families with young boys, you can't go wrong with "Swiss Family Robinson," "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," and "Mysterious Island," the original '60s version. I also love anything with Carey Grant, but "Houseboat" with Sofia Loren is one of my favorites. Thanks for reminding me of all those great movies I need to dust off the shelves!

Put "eat chocolate" at the top of your list of things to do today. That way, at least you'll get one thing done. ☺ There, don't you feel better?

Please leave a comment! I enjoy hearing your thoughts, whether you agree with me or not. If we all agreed on everything how boring would that be? Worse than eating white chocolate, because it's fake. So be real, be yourself.
