For the next several days I will be posting about the World Congress of Families. This year it is being held in Sydney, Australia.  Remember how we helped to raise funds for Angela to attend? She is sending daily reports of the presentations, interviews she is able to have, and more. I am excited to share with you what she is experiencing. There are so many around the world - politicians, religious leaders, community organizers, trained professionals, and others - who are dedicated to defending the family. I will try to post each day's events in order so you are not reading them backwards as you scroll down. I have broken up Angela's summaries into several posts so it isn't overwhelming to see a HUGE post. Remember, if you have any questions you would like her to ask when she gives her interviews, leave them in the comments and I will pass them along to her.

The Living Christ: Calvary's Hill or Empty Easter Tomb Garden Craft

empty tomb 09

About two weeks ago a friend of mine shared a photo on facebook of a really fun Easter craft to do with children. The caption on the photo said it had been found on pinterest. I searched pinterest and could NOT find the photo, no matter what I typed in the search box. About 5 days after starting this garden I noticed the same photo I had seen on facebook starting to show up on pinterest but with no link to the original source. I very much dislike when people pin things to pinterest without checking to see that it pins to an original source. Give proper credit where it is due! Now because I am a stickler for giving credit this journey took me on quite a hunt! I was finally able to trace it back to this photo on facebook. Whew! I hope that is where it originated. The other photo I found on pinterest just about a week ago lead back to a blog no longer in use but because she labeled her photo with her blog name I was able to find her new blog, House of Joyful Noise, and an updated post she called Calvary Hill Planting. It looks like she had originally shared this craft about 2 or 3 years ago. Even though I found her site after we started our project, I want to make sure she is given proper credit as it looks like she may have been one of the first to share it on the internet.

empty tomb 01

Gather the following supplies: a small 2 inch pot, an 8 inch round planter base, wheat berries {whole wheat that's not ground}, small rocks or gravel, potting soil. If using wheat you can start this about nine days before Easter. If you use Kwik grass seed start this at least three weeks before Easter {now!}.

empty tomb 02

Put gravel in the bottom of the planter base for drainage. Center the pot in the gravel and place rocks around it to keep it from rolling.

empty tomb 03

Place potting soil on top of and around the pot creating a hill over the pot.

empty tomb 04

Spread wheat all over the soil. Since we weren't sure what we were doing we also spread Kwik Grass Seed.

empty tomb 05

Carefully spread a thin layer of soil over the seeds. Spray with water at least three times a day to keep the soil moist.

empty tomb 06

I know this photo is a bit blurry, sorry! You can see the soil is starting to be raised up because the wheat is sprouting! Just spray well with water then gently press soil back down.

empty tomb 07

Believe it or not this is six days after planting. Look how fast the wheat grows! The grass seed hasn't even sprouted yet.

empty tomb 08

Nine days after planting and we need to do a little trimming. A few of the grass seeds have started to sprout.

empty tomb 09

We pulled some of the wheat from the front and side of the pot, trimmed about 2 inches off the top of the wheat, laid down more rocks, found a big rock for the front of the tomb, and made three crosses out of twigs.

This has been a very satisfying project for the kids. Hearing "Can I water the tomb?" each day really made me laugh. It just sounded funny, ya know?

Names of Christ booklet 03

Usually we do a Names of Christ unit study at Christmastime. This year I decided to incorporate it into our countdown to Easter. I designed this little booklet for my children (the younger ones) to use as we study. {The older ones are using these books from the Redheaded Hostess.} There is a page for each name covered in The Living Christ: A 30 day Easter Countdown. There are also seven blank pages for other names of Christ you may want to study.

Names of Christ booklet 07

Each page has a place for a small picture of Jesus.

 Names of Christ booklet 05

Those pictures are included in the pdf file. They are paintings by such artists as Heinrich Hofman, James Tissot, and Carl Bloch.

Names of Christ booklet 08

There is a spot to write down scripture references, the meaning of the name, as well as what that name teaches us about Jesus Christ. {This one is Cookie's book}

Here is the file:

Printing instructions:
Print the cover page by itself.
Print pages 2-11 back-to-back. This will put the names in the same order as they are discussed in the countdown. So print pages 2-3 back-to-back, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9, 10-11.
Print one copy for each person of the picture page. There are 21 pictures but only 20 pages so you will have an extra picture left over. We opted for cutting and pasting but you can print the last page on sticker paper.

Assembling the booklet:

Names of Christ booklet 01

Put all pages in order including the cover and fold in half. All the pink you see on the page is actually light gray in the pdf file. Our printer fell off the table {don't ask!} and now won't print colors correctly.

 Names of Christ booklet 02

Punch three holes down the left side.

Names of Christ booklet 03

Cut about a 20 inch piece of twine or ribbon and thread through the middle hole first, up to the top, back down to the middle, down to the bottom, then back up to the middle. Tie

Names of Christ booklet 04

The inside center should look like this.

Use and enjoy!

The Living Christ: Haydn - The Creation

"The composer, Haydn, after walking in the fields near his home one day, went back to his piano and began his mighty oratorio, The Creation. As he finished the last notes, he declared, "There it is; it is my response to the wondrous creations of God." We live in a beautiful world, and like Haydn, we can respond to it by doing, achieving, pursuing, and creating in our own lives." (Barbra B. Smith, A Fruitful Season)

The Living Christ Easter Countdown: Jehovah

telling of Moses and the burning bush
{telling the story of Moses and the burning bush}

Hebrews 11 contains a recounting of many stories of faith from the Old Testament. All these people had their faith centered in Jesus Christ, the Jehovah of the Old Testament.

{the story of the boy Samuel being called by the Lord}

We took turns reading the chapter aloud, then told some of the stories in more detail.

The Living Christ: A 30 Day Easter Countdown

Easter is one of the most spiritual and beautiful holidays! To celebrate the atonement and resurrection of Jesus Christ and what it means in our lives is truly to reflect on the whole purpose of why we are here and on HE who makes it possible for us to be redeemed from our sins.

This 30 day countdown to Easter utilizes The Living Christ: The Testimony of the Apostles. Each day focuses on a portion of that document – either a sentence or a paragraph. Many names by which Christ is known are included in The Living Christ, consequently there are also days of the countdown that focus on a name given. Hopefully this will aid in understanding all the characteristics of Jesus Christ and how we can try to be more like Him in our daily lives.
I spent some time redoing my Easter countdown from last year. I have expanded it to 30 days and incorporated names of Christ mentioned in The Living Christ: The Testimony of the Apostles.

As part of our countdown we also did many activities with our children. Links to those activities can be found at the bottom of this post. Not only are there links to activities but there are also links to The Life of Jesus Christ Bible Videos the church has produced. This page will continually be updated as more videos are released. These add greatly to this countdown and are a valuable addition in teaching your children about Jesus Christ.

The pdf file is ordered as follows: the days of the countdown with daily devotional ideas, tags to cut out and display on an Easter tree, also included are all of the artwork or paintings first in small scale (for you to create your own tags) and also in large scale (to use as an art study). The paintings and artwork I chose are, for the most part, part of the public domain. Most were found at wikimedia.

My hope is that your testimony and those of your children in the Savior, Jesus Christ, will grow as you focus more on Him this Easter season.

Enjoy!

You'll notice that several of the tags have the same number. For those days I thought that having two (or three) pictures better clarified the scriptures and doctrinal concepts being taught and discussed.

An Easter Countdown: HE LIVES!!

We have had a wonderful blessed Easter! After speaking to my two oldest on skype first thing this morning (they are in Barcelona), we finished preparing for church. I snapped this picture of my children with their new dresses (and tie for the boy!) before getting in the van.

Edited: Yes, I sewed all their dresses! The pattern is pretty easy and whips up fairly fast. The girls all wanted "Pride & Prejudice" era dresses. I even made one for me (but it doesn't look quite as nice on a pregnant mama). The two oldest will make their own when they return from Spain. We will all wear them again on Mother's Day. I'm hoping to get a family picture taken then and will post that when/if we do.

Church was wonderful as always. I sang a musical number, Beautiful Savior (that link is the BYU Mens Choir), with two other ladies. It is always a treat for me to sing with others that know how to harmonize! Usually I sing the alto part but today I sang 2nd soprano (can't quite hit the F the high soprano sang in the descant).

After church we listened to this amazingly beautiful and moving CD.

It is an oratorio composed by Rob Gardner and performed by talented soloists, the London Symphony Orchestra, and a truly angelic choir. It is the perfect way to celebrate Easter! To hear the story of the end of Christ's life put to moving music that touches the heart and soul - as my 8 year old daughter Fudge said during 'Hosanna,' - "It makes me have happy tears in my eyes."

You can hear selections of some of the pieces here, or purchase it here at Spire Music, or as an instant download from amazon.

You can see a preview of Hosanna below:

I especially love how Rob Gardner chose my favorite instrument (what I call the instrument of heaven), the cello, to represent Christ in the music. Watch "Gethsemane" below to see for yourself.

As a special gift (I received my copy as a gift from a friend) I will send a Lamb of God CD to two random commenters on this post. Just answer this question:

What special thing did you do today to celebrate the atonement and resurrection of Jesus Christ?

An Easter Countdown: Judgment

This activity goes along with day fifteen of The Living Christ: An Easter Countdown.

Washington CD Temple Mural (click on picture to enlarge)

Today's activity was short and simple. We discussed the artwork chosen for the day, the mural at the Washington DC Temple. We looked at the faces and positions of the people in the painting. Those on Christ's right side (our left) are all facing Him, looking at Him, and approaching Him. Some are on bended knee in worship of Him. In the background are heavenly hosts on Christ's right side as well.

On Christ's left side (our right) are those who are ashamed and sorrowful. They can't bear to look at the Savior. They realize the lives they chose to live did not bring them to Christ. Satan and his minions are gone, having deserted those they led astray. The people are left to themselves to suffer for their bad choices.

One of my children pointed out that there are no children on Christ's left side, only on the right. I thought that was very poignant! Children are naturally innocent and do try to do what is right and good. No wonder Jesus taught, "Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 18:3-4, KJV)

An Easter Countdown: The Second Coming

This activity goes along with day fourteen of The Living Christ: An Easter Countdown.

Sometimes talking about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, especially all the signs and calamities that will occur before, can be scary for younger children, and even teenagers as my husband found out when discussing this with the youth at a Bishop's Youth Discussion.  For our activity today, instead of focusing on the signs we talked about what we can do now to prepare ourselves for the second coming.

We followed the sharing time lesson "I Believe that Jesus Will Come Again."

We went over the parable of the Ten Virgins that Christ taught. Then read this quote by President Spencer W. Kimball:

"President Kimball taught, “In our lives the oil of preparedness is accumulated drop by drop in righteous living. Attendance at sacrament meetings adds oil to our lamps, drop by drop over the years. Fasting, family prayer, … control of bodily appetites, preaching the gospel, studying the scriptures—each act of dedication and obedience is a drop added to our store. Deeds of kindness, payment of offerings and tithes, chaste thoughts and actions, marriage in the covenant for eternity—these, too, contribute importantly to the oil with which we can at midnight refuel our exhausted lamps.” (Faith Precedes the Miracle, p. 256.)

Each child then filled out this coloring page (found at the sharing time link above) writing on the drops of 'oil' what they can do personally to add oil to their lamps.

Jocelyn showed a very cute craft Jesus Christ Ascending that could be used as Jesus Christ descending and would go along well with the Second Coming.

An Easter Countdown: Testimony of the Apostles

This activity goes along with day thirteen of The Living Christ: An Easter Countdown.

Our activity today involved listening to and watching videos of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles bear their "Special Witnesses of Christ." If you click on the title next to each picture on that page it will open a new window containing a short video (usually around three minutes) of that apostle bearing his testimony.

We also read the testimonies of two past apostles.

Elder Bruce R. McConkie (gave a powerful testimony in what he knew was his last General Conference as he was deathly ill. The Purifying Power of Gethsemane is worth reading over and over again. The video is Elder McConkie giving this final address. It is about 10 minutes long so it may take a while to load but please watch it!

Elder David B. Haight shared a beautiful vision of the Savior that he had in his October 1989 General Conference address, "The Sacrament - and the Sacrifice."

An Easter Countdown: His Priesthood and Church are Restored

This activity goes along with day twelve of The Living Christ: An Easter Countdown.

When Mr. Ferrero Rocher was a missionary he used labeled cups to teach about the apostasy and restoration of the gospel. I have seen other versions but none as detailed as his.  He still uses them to teach people! I know the youth loved it when he taught them about the apostasy at a Bishop's Youth discussion. We made our own set for our activity today.

The labels for each cup not only tells what was part of Christ's original church but also has scripture references for each one right from the bible. The labels with each of the original apostles also tells how they died. All were martyred except for John who we believe "did not die (John 21:20-23), but has been allowed to remain on the earth as a ministering servant until the time of the Lord's second coming." (Bible Dictionary)

Materials Needed:
34 small bath cups
tape
permanent marker
Apostasy Cups PDF file This has all the labels for the cups as well as an explanation of how to teach the apostasy using the cups.

Print off the pdf file. Cut out each label (on page 2) and tape it to a small cup. Number the top of each cup with the corresponding number.

To teach about the apostasy build a foundation with #1 - #14 (two rows of seven cups side by side). Just say the names of the apostles as you build the foundation. How they died will be discussed later.

1. JESUS CHRIST (Eph. 2:19-20)

2. PROPHETS (Eph. 4:11) Continuous Revelation (Amos 3:7)

3. APOSTLES (Eph. 4:11) PETER was crucified head down in Rome, 66 AD

4. ANDREW was crucified on a cross. Preached until his death 2 days later, 74 AD

5. JAMES, son of Zebedee, was beheaded in Jerusalem by the sword. (Acts 12: 1-9)

6. JOHN was banished to the Isle of Patmos 96 AD (Rev. 1:9)

7. PHILLIP was crucified at Heirapole Phryga, 52 AD

8. BARTHOLOMEW flayed to death by a whip. 52 AD

9. THOMAS was run through by a lance at Corehandal, East Indies 52 AD

10. MATTHEW was slain by the sword in Ethiopia about 60 AD

11. JAMES, son of Alphaeus, was thrown from the pinnacle of the temple then beaten to death, 60 AD

12. THADDAEUS was shot to death by arrows 72 AD

13. SIMON was crucified in Persia 74 AD

14. JUDAS ISCARIOT committed suicide by hanging himself 34 AD (Acts 1:18)
MATTHIAS replaced Judas Iscariot (Acts 1:26) and was stoned and Beheaded in Ethiopia 70 AD

This is the foundation of Jesus Christ, the apostles and prophets.

The rest of the tower is built as you talk about each of the other things that were a part of the original church. 2nd row: #15 - #20 balanced down the middle of the foundation rows.

15. MEN CALLED OF GOD “as was Aaron” (Heb 5:4) (John 15:16)

16. A LAY CLERGY (Matt. 10:8)

17. DEACONS (Phil. 1:1)

18. TEACHERS (Eph. 4:11)

19. PRIESTS (Acts 6:7 Luke 1:8)

20. BISHOPS (Phil 1:1)

Build upon each previous row as follows - 3rd row: #21 - #25 balanced on top of row 2. 4th row: #26 - #29. 5th row: #30 – 32. 6th row: #33 - #34 until the tower is completed.

21. ELDERS (Acts 14:23)

22. SEVENTIES (Luke 10:1)

23. HIGH PRIESTS (Heb 5:1)

24. EVANGELISTS or PATRIARCHS(Eph. 4:11)

25. MEMBERS CALLED SAINTS (Eph. 2:19)

26. NAME OF THE CHURCH the Church of Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 1:9-15)

27. BELIEF IN A PERSONAL GODHEAD(Heb. 1:1-3 Matt. 28:19)

28. FAITH (Heb 11:1-6)

29. REPENTANCE (Acts 2:38)

30. BAPTISM BY IMMERSION (Matt. 3:16)

31. GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST (Acts 2:38) GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT (1 Cor. 12)

32. KEEP THE SABBATH DAY HOLY(Gen. 2:2 Ex. 20:8)

33. ADDITIONAL SCRIPTURE (Ezek. 37:16-17)

34. BAPTISM FOR THE DEAD (1 Cor. 15:29)

Talk about how Jesus Christ died but gave the priesthood keys to his apostles to carry on His work. Then talk about each of the apostles’ deaths, carefully taking that cup away from the foundation to show how priesthood authority was also eventually taken away from the earth. You will only be able to do a few of the apostles before the whole tower comes falling down. This shows how the apostasy came to be.

For Younger children: Take about the restoration and how Jesus Christ (cup #1) and Heavenly Father appeared to Joseph Smith (cup #2). Then 12 apostles were called (cups #2 - #14). Slowly build the tower up again just as before talking about how each of those things that were a part of the original church were restored to the earth.

For Older Children, Teens and Adults: Discuss how and why some of the different Christian religions were started (churches #1 – #8 in the pdf file). With each church discussed, just take three of the cups and build a small tower with two cups on the bottom and one on top to show how each church had some truth but not ALL of the truths as the original church had. Then build the tower as described for younger children.

Various Christian Churches' Beginnings

1. ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH

Founded in 1054 after a split between Eastern and Western Christian churches.

Reason: Acknowledgement by the Western Church of the primacy of the Bishop of Rome.

Main Tenet: Belief in the Nicene Creed (AD 325) and that the pope is the successor of the apostle Peter.

2. LUTHERAN CHURCH

Protestant denomination, founded on the beliefs of Martin Luther in 1526 as a breakaway group from the Roman Catholic Church.

Reason: Denied the supremacy of the pope.

Main Tenet: People can be saved only by faith in Jesus Christ – rather than through good works.

3. CHURCH OF ENGLAND
(Anglican, Episcopal)

Founded by King Henry VIII in 1534 as a breakaway group from tht eRoman Catholic Church.

Reason: Henry refused to recognize the authority of the pope who would not dissolve his marriage to Catherine of Aragon.

Main Tenet: Belief in the Nicene Creed (AD 325) and bishops independent of Rome.

4. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
(Reformed Churches)

Protestant denomination, founded on the beliefs of John Calvin in 1560 as a breakaway group from the Roman Catholic Church.

Reason: Congregations should be governed by boards of elders and not a pope.

Main Tenet: Bible is the final authority, and local lay elders govern the church.

5. BAPTIST CHURCH

Protestant denomination founded by John Smyth in 1611 as a breakaway group from the Church of England.

Reason: Opposed baptism of infants.

Main Tenet: Baptism should be by immersion following voluntary declaration of faith in Jesus Christ as Savior.

6. METHODIST CHURCH

Protestant denomination founded by John Wesley in 1784 as a breakaway group from the Church of England.

Reason: Anglican clergy opposed Methodist lay preachers.

Main Tenet: Live a disciplined Christian life according to the method laid out in the Bible.

7. SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH

Founded on the beliefs of William Miller in 1863 as a breakaway group from the Baptist Church.

Reason: Sabbath should be on the seventh day (Saturday)

Main Tenet: Observe the Sabbath on Saturday, and Christ will return in person in latter-days.

8. PENTECOSTAL CHURCH

Protestant denomination founded by Charles Fox Parham in 1901.

Reason: Religious revival required before end of world.

Main Tenet: Christians should experience baptism in the Holy Spirit, manifested by the speaking in tongues and other gifts of the spirit.
